I just found out what a pickle is.

True or False?

A pickle is a pickle.

If you answered true - you’re in good company because up until a few years ago I thought that as well. Turns out though, a pickle is not just a pickle. No, a pickle is a cucumber that has been “pickled.”

Crazy, I know!

I nearly made it a quarter of century before having this revelation and I consider myself somewhat intelligent (at least enough to know that a pickle is a cucumber). Lack of intelligence wasn’t the problem (maybe a little bit), but the idea was formed at a young age that a pickle and cucumber were two separate things and I never gave much thought to where pickles come from.

The same thing happens with the ideas we have about God, Christianity, and the Bible. We have pre-conceived ideas about Christianity and who God is. These ideas that have been formed are a combination of “Sunday School” teachings as a kids, the teachings of a particular pastor, the positive and negative interactions we’ve had with self-proclaiming Christians, and personal life experiences such as the loss of a family member.

And just as I never gave any thought to where the pickle came from, I rarely challenged my own beliefs that have been formed over time through a multitude of unique circumstances.

Some of those beliefs being about:

  • The character of God

  • The “rules” of the Bible

  • The church

  • The Holy Spirit

  • Prayer

  • & Christianity in general

In challenging my own beliefs I have come to the conclusion that I’m not alone in this.

So I’m here to ask you… When was the last time you challenged your own beliefs?

I mean really put all the “knowledge” you have about what you think to the side and just went to your Bible to see what it actually has to say about:

  • Your Health

  • Your Job

  • Your Marriage

  • Your Parenting

  • Your Friendships

  • Your Money

  • Your Tithe

  • Your Church

  • Your Purpose

Furthermore, what the Bible has to say about some of the the cornerstones of the Christian faith:

  • God

  • Jesus

  • Salvation

  • Water Baptism

  • The Holy Spirit

That is what I’m setting out to do. I want to start the conversation around these topics and hopefully be the catalyst for you discovering the truth.

My prayer is that you would be challenged like I have been to investigate your own beliefs. No longer allow a pickle to just be a pickle. Let’s discover the truth together.
