I'm Challenging Christianity

My passion for challenging the status quo of “Christianity" is because doing so has brought me into a deeper relationship with God then ever before.

Moment of truth though - doing this has proven to be very uncomfortable. I’ve had to admit what I thought was absolute truth and even argued for in the past, was actually false. It takes a shot at your pride, because let’s be honest, we want to have an answer for everything. And when the answer we have turns out to be wrong it stings.

Not only does the realization that you were wrong sting, but the realization that what you discovered isn’t as popular with the world as your previous belief.

Here’s what I’ve found - in the name of being culturally relevant and not seeming insane we have slowly over time omitted sections of the Bible and/or “repurposed” a few verses to imply what they want them to.

Get this - Paul called this a couple thousand years ago! II Timothy 4:3 says that there will come a time that “people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear.”

After reading that, I couldn’t help but stop and say, “Let that not be said of me!”

I don’t want to be chasing the next craze or blindly following someone else’s teachings.

Please don’t get me wrong - I believe in pastors and teachers and listening to the Word of God be taught. That is a crucial element of the church.

Paul does say though at the end of 1 Thessalonians, “…test everything that is said.”

You and I have a responsibility to verify what we’ve heard is truth. This doesn’t mean we have to be skeptical of teachings. We just can’t let our learning end with hearing.

Once we dig into the Word for ourselves, it should confirm what we heard which will allow the teaching to take an even deeper root in your heart.

By no means is this a  public announcement to stop listening to your pastor or podcasts. This is just a challenge to move beyond passively consuming content to actively pursuing truth.

It’s hard. It’s uncomfortable.

BUT

It’s life changing.
